LED Downlights - MR16 12V, GU10 240V or 12V MR16 Backwards Compatible Philips Master Bulbs

As anyone living in Queensland knows, we're about to be further screwed by our state government and power companies on power costs to the song of 21.4% with no reasonable explanation why.

I personally think the laws relating to what a state government is allowed to do urgently need a shake up but that's a topic for another day (although I will say this - primary services should NEVER be privatised. EVER.).

Anyway, now everyone needs to scramble and do whatever they can to minimise the impact of this dick move.

So job number one for a lot of people is going to be getting their lighting sorted.

For me, this is a priority as my house uses exclusively 12V MR16 50W halogen downlights throughout.

That equals one big-ass power bill.

For the uninitiated, there are two types of downlight voltage and socket formats (with the LED incarnation pictured below):

1: 12V LED Light (achieved using a transformer hidden in your ceiling - one per light) with MR16 pins.


2: 240V LED Light with GU10 socket.



I've got the first type (12V/MR16).
So off I went and whacked a 5W LED 12V MR16 globe in there and no dice.
The thing wouldn't even turn on.

As it turns out, 12V/MR16 LED lights are only designed to work with special LED transformers.
The two older types are electronic (what I've got - small and light plastic things) and iron core (big and heavy funnily enough).

Now apparently the Iron Core transformers will actually make your LED lights work however they will shorten the life span of the bulb.

Anyway - I'm now faced with the situation of having to get this compatibility issue sorted.

The three options I've got are:

1) Replace all the electronic transformers with LED transformers and use 12V MR16 LED lights

2) Throw out all the old transformers and have a GU10 flexible cable wired straight onto the end of the 240V cable.

3) Replace 50W halogens with Philips Master MR16 12V Bulbs (with patented compatibility circuitry).





To explain the differences a little further, we need to get familiar with the anatomy of what's involved.

In either scenario, there is a transformer (also called a driver), a controller Integrated Circuit chip and the actually LED's themselves.

In the 12V/MR16 scenario, the transformer is separated out from the LED bulb which simply contains the IC chip and the LED emitters themselves.

In the 240V/GU10 scenario the transformer is integrated into the bulb (that long white bit at the top) as well as the IC chip and LEDs.

Now there's one other option to address this issue...
This involves using a specially designed 12V MR16 bulb made by Philips which contains patented circuitry  designed to work with old 12V electronic transformers (described on this page).

So I started reading up on each option and came up with a quick list of Pros and Cons for each:

MR16 12V
Pros:
  • Separated transformer which allows bulb to run (almost) entirely cool giving best chance of long bulb life
  • If transformer blows bulb should survive (being that the bulb is the expensive part).
  • MR16 lights are generally a shorter profile so should fit better in convex gimbals (light fittings).
Cons:
  • Higher deployment cost (new transformer for every light).
  • Sources suggest that use of any transformer (even LED specific) can potentially cause a fire.

GU10 240V
Pros:
  • Cheaper to deploy as GU10 sockets much cheaper than LED transformers.
  • Bulbs cost the same as MR16 verisons.
  • Uses slightly less electricity as transformer integrated directly in bulb.
Cons:
  • Integrated transformer generates some heat which may slightly shorten bulb life.
  • GU10 sockets require a ground cable to be wired in. This can be an issue if there's not a ground cable already running to the transformer.

MR16 12V Philips Master (Backwards Compatible)

Pros:
  • Electrician not required
  • Immediately start enjoying power savings
  • Cheapest option overall
Cons:
  • Still using a transformer so not perfect in terms of safety or efficiency.
  • 10W model has a fan which can become louder over time and seize due to dust or bugs (7W model has no fan).

Decision:

I decided to give the Philips Master LED 7W a crack and they worked perfectly :)

I also gave the 10W version a try and can confirm that the fan sound is annoying and they aren't actually any brighter and they don't fit in standard halogen fittings properly (radius too large) whereas the 7W models are fine.

I got a quote for re-wiring all my lights to GU10 sockets and when I did the math it worked out about $1300 cheaper overall to replace all lights in the house with Philips Master models as it did to re-wire and purchase decent (Philips Master quality or better) GU10 bulbs and new fittings.

Some personal feedback regarding the Philips Master bulbs is:

  • Generally speaking they are excellent
  • They are best suited to areas of a high concentration of LED bulbs (areas where my lights are spaced fair apart are a little bit darker than areas where they are close together).
  • The colour temperature is pleasant in the home.
  • The light output is solid. What I mean by this is that there is no motion strobe effect. I tried a Nichia 8W 60 Degree 3000K bulb and while it was compatible with my old transformers the light it produced it obviously wasn't cycling very fast. To clarify, when you look at the light it produces it appears solid and there is no flickering. When motion occurs within the light coverage area however the object creates a strobe effect (imagine a very old movie with a poor framerate where the motion is very jumpy).

The only area in my home where they don't quite cut it is the main dining area where the bulbs are unfortunately spaced very far apart.

I will probably have to bite the bullet for these four bulbs and get some LED transformers por a GU10 socket installed so I can increase my bulb options to get some super-bright Cree LEDs.

Hope this has helped and that your decision is easier than mine was!

By the way - all work involving 240V wire connectivity alterations must be carried out by a licensed electrician (duh).

Also (and this is a bit of a grey area) I would personally make sure that any bulbs you purchase meet Australian standards.

The only standard I could really find that they must comply with is C-Tick however according to what I read on the interwebs the manufacturer isn't required to put this on the packaging.

Chances are if they've paid for it they would though.

Miccus Home RTX Long Range Bluetooth Transmitter

I'm pretty impressed with this little device.

I've been looking at a Bluetooth transmitter that could plug into a HTPC and send the signal to an amp in another part of the house.

The idea behind this is that you could control the media (music mainly) being played back from the Win7 HTPC from an Android Smartphone using MediaCenter Control over WiFi  from anywhere in your house and have it pump out a proper stereo.

To achieve this I first off used a Creative BT-D1 Bluetooth transmitter with a Logitech bluetooth receiver.

I opted for a more expensive transmitter (there's heaps of $10 jobs on eBay) as I figured it would be better quality.

How very wrong I was.

The Creative transmitter was totally piss-ant in terms of transmission power.

To boot, there was no software available to actually control which device it pairs with from Creative.

I thought the Windows Bluetooth controls might magically appear as well but I'm guessing this thing isn't compliant with what Win 7 considers a "real" bluetooth device. 

It supports some creative crap called apt-X which I'm sure is of use to someone.
If this is you, go over to eBay and you will be able to find a bargain shortly...

Anyway, after being bitterly disappointed with the Creative rip-job, I did some proper research.

I needed a bluetooth trasmitter that wasn't crap and could actually send the RF signal more than 10 metres.

This led me to look at the Miccus Home RTX which claimed transmit distances of up to 45 metres.

I took a gamble and ordered it from the only place I could see it for sale (eBay) after seeing generally positive (but not very specific) user feedback on the device.

Well the little thing just arrived and I can happily report that it works as described.




I set this bad boy up at the complete opposite end of my house and paired it up with the Logitech receiver and away it went.

Note in the picture that it actually has an external omni-directional antenna.
Win.

Perfect quality audio and super simple to setup.

At $60 it's not the cheapest thing in the world but it's not a deal breaker price either.

I'm so very glad this device exists and I definitely recommend it for anyone in a similar situation.

Coolermaster Elite 120 Advanced - From 70's Toaster to Carbon Fibre Beast

Just a quick one today :)

While updating the post on the Asus mobo used in my latest HTPC build I thought I'd post up some info on the case I went with and the quick mod I did that made a HUGE difference to its appearance.

When speccing up the machine I wanted an ITX case that let me use normal size (i.e. not laptop) components as to keep the cost down (5.25" BluRay drive, standard ATX power supply etc.).

Luckily Coolermaster has recently released the Elite 120 Advanced.

This is a great little case albeit it slightly on the larger size of mini ITX, but still a good fit for a HTPC.

I actually originally specced up this machine with a Bitfenix Prodigy but promptly returned it as soon as I saw it.

It was waaaay to big to look at home in a lounge area...

Anyway, the case ticks all the boxes as far as component support however looks a tad ugly - but we can fix that :)

Other people have obviously been thinking the same thing and I saw some other attempts people had made to pretty this thing up on various forums.

So I had a quick look on eBay and found a few people selling small individual sheets of 3M Carbon Fibre Di-Noc Vinyl adhesive for less than $10.

All I can say is - wow. What a difference this stuff makes to the appearance:



A quick word of advice if you go down this path.

The case badge is slightly recessed and will leave a divet if you whack the vinyl straight on.

Get yourself some Rapid Filla and smooth it over before you whack it on and you'll get a nice finish like that in the picture above.

Android NFC + Paywave in Australia = Suck

Just picked up a Samsung 9305 and am raging that Google Wallet isn't officially available in Australia for Android (where there's a will however...).

For those of you that don't know, Google Wallet allows you to process online transaction (who cares - I've got paypal and a credit card) but also let's you bind a Credit Card to your Google Account as well as to an NFC chip on your Smart Phone (such that you can use your smart phone at POS terminals that support Paywave).

In theory everything that uses NFC should be able to be associated with an account and an NFC chip ID.

Unfortunately, it appears that this is too hard to implement in Australia right now, most like due to Australian Government finance laws.

Come on Google. If anyone can make this happen, it's you.

Cisco Voice - Lots of extra work. Zero advantage.

Aaargh...

After working with Digium Switchvox products for the last 18 months I'm now back in Cisco land supporting both Cisco Unified Communications Manager (UCM) for enterprise users and Cisco Call Manager Express (CME) for branch users (this particular organisation hasn't centralised everything yet).

Having worked with a variety of voice platforms over the years I was shocked to find that everyone "just accepts" how convoluted and inefficient the Cisco voice platform is to manage.

In this article I'll do a quick feature comparison of Cisco CME, UCM and Digium Switchvox as well as publish the time taken and resources required to implement a solution and complete day to day tasks (in my lab environment).

Additionally, I'll be covering how to setup UCM for a multi-domain deployment (just in case you're in the same scenario I'm in)...

Happy to wave the Cisco flag for routers and switches.

Don't know if their voice platform measure up though...

Cisco UCM ESX 5.1 VM

Just a quick one...

If you're playing around with Cisco UCM and want to spin it up in VMWare there's one important thing to be aware of.

Make sure you set the SCSI adapter type to LSI Logic SAS Controller or the installer will barf error messages re server hardware compatibility.

Sigh - don't really enjoy working on UCM.

Have played with quite a few voice servers and this one takes the cake for most illogical and all-over-the-place menu system I've used.

The whole having a separate product for voicemail and IVR seems a bit late 80's as well...

At least it seems pretty stable and doesn't start having random issues like other PABX's.

Or maybe I haven't been using it long enough...

Raspbmc - Making WiFi Work

Wireless - a minor PITA to get working

Ok - I Had the adapter plugged in, powered the unit on and noticed that the adapter light wasn't doing anything.

FYI - this is the adapter I'm using.

Unplugged and re-plugged the adapter with the unit powered on and was greeted with the message indicating detection of the adapter:

Pulse-Eight CEC Adapter

That's good - but it's still not joining the wifi network.

Maybe I ballsed up my psk (which is pretty cryptic).
As the PSK is hashed out as you type it, thought I'd just tackle it through SSH through a wired connection.

So I had a quick look around and most info was pointing me to edit /etc/wpa.conf
Only problem was, that file didn't exist.

Ran a quick GREP to hind my SSID which I'd saved through the RaspBMC interface and found it (and my psk) in the following file:

/home/pi/.xbmc/userdata/addon_data/script.raspbmc.settings/settings.xml

So now I've copied and pasted my PSK but still no dice.

Now I started to think the raspbmc GUI might not quite be telling the truth about what's going on - being that it was displaying the ethernet adapters MAC address where it should be showing me the wifi adapter's...

At this point I thought - hmmm - let's just forget XBMC and attack it as just a linux box.

I then performed the following steps as per the main post and a comment over at anup narkhede's blog (thanks anup).

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
allow-hotplug wlan0
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-psk wifi_password_noquotemarks
wpa-ssid ssid_noquotemarks
wpa-conf /etc/wpa.conf

* exit and save


sudo nano /etc/wpa.conf

network={
ssid="YOUR_SSID"
proto=RSN
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
group=CCMP TKIP
psk="YOUR_PASSWORD"
}


Now - disconnect your wired LAN connection and reboot.

You'll probably notice the light pattern of your wireless adapter is a little more random now - that's a good thing :)

I looked in RaspBMCs network settings area and nothing had changed.
I then however looked at the connected devices on my wireless AP and saw that my raspbmc device had got a lease and I could now ping it :)

Fired up a video and all good.
